And that’s because of the 2007 Philippines Senatorial Election. It all started when I posted about the senatorial candidates invading Wikipedia and taking their campaign online via other online medium. After that post, my slimstat numbers showed a considerable increase in Hits and actual visits.

Even the search strings as recorded by slimstats show mostly the keywords, senatorial, elections, candidates, and Philippines. And most of the search strings point to the different blog posts I made regarding the Philippines senatorial elections. Looks like, there’s not much resources about the coming Philippine senatorial elections. Considering that a lot of people are searching for names of senatorial candidates and other informations about them. I’m guessing that these searchers are mostly students as well as online voters from Singapore.

So for those who are looking for some useful information regarding the Philippines senatorial candidates, I hope you find the following posts useful:

Senatorial candidates invades Wikipedia

List of Senatorial Candidates (Team Unity and Genuine Opposition)

I’ll try to cover the Philippines senatorial election in the future once I find some useful resources and also when the elections gets more exciting in the coming days.

Check out the links to the senatoriables’ online presence. Some of them really put an effort in to making their online presence informative. Let’s all face it, the 12 Senators would definitely come from these two groups anyway.

This is my second post about the 2007 Philippine Senatorial Elections, specifically on how senatorial candidates are launching their election campaign on the web. I don’t know why I’m doing this considering that I have never believed in Philippine elections and politics anyway. But this coming 2007 elections has been such a great circus since the campaign period has started, that I can not helped but say something about it.

So this time, I cannot help but react to Senatorial candidate, and previous Philippine vice-presidential loser Loren Legarda’s statement on how internet technology is leveling the playing field for senatorial candidates. (via inquirer.net) Either, Senator Legarda is too excited about getting interviewed via podcasts or she was just exaggerating (as all other senatorial candidates are when they get the chance to be interviewed anywhere).

First argument, how can podcasting or any other web technology utilized to cover the May senatorial elections level the playing field among senatorial candidates who either have the money or not, when majority of the voting Filipinos have no access to the internet? What percentage of voters can listen to podcasts?, can check on the friendster account or wikipedia entries of senatorial candidates? I don’t think it is enough to gather substantiative number of votes for senatorial candidates to win the election.

I think it is just a waste of senatorial candidates time and effort. Web presence and online media coverage would have no significant effect on the chances of a senatorial candidate in the coming senatorial elections. At the end of the day, what would matter is how the masses have remembered you when you visited them in their shelters in the slum areas. And add to that, how much goodies you gave them during your campaign visits.

To win an election, get the votes of the masses. Not the internet-savvy-pinoy-voting elites.

Looks like Friendster is not the only web 2.0 application that is being utilized by Philippine 2007 Senatorial elections candidate. Inquirer.net reports:

The battle for attention is getting out of the streets and into the Internet with some senatorial candidates for the upcoming elections taking advantage of Wikipedia.org, the online free encyclopedia service.

Among those senatorial candidates who  have updated Wikipedia entries listed by inquirer.net report, are Mike Defensor, Cong. Chiz Escudero, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, Sen. Manny Villar among others. Their entries were recently updated a few days after filing their certificates of candidacy.

I checked some of the wikipedia entries of the said senatorial candidates and noticed that a few of them have links to their own personal websites. Pangilinan, Escudero and Villar have their own websites  with information such as career highlights, personal bios, advocacies among other relevant information about them. Unfortunately, none of these senatorial candidates sites’ utilized blogging platform or any dynamic content management systems. It would have been great to see a dynamic website or campaign blog with round-the-clock updates on the candidates’ campaign sorties.

On another note, like Yuga, I couldn’t help but ask whether these websites or the senatorial candidates’ web presence could really win them the elections. Considering that majority of the Philippine electoral group belong  to the “technologically under privileged” group, or simply the poor people who don’t have access to the internet. If these candidates are targeting the minority group of online Filipinos, that could not win them the 2007 elections. And besides, most of these online Filipinos belong to the “intelligent votes”, meaning they could not be easily persuaded by any propaganda or political gimmicks.

But then, the 2007 Philippine senatorial election campaign is already a circus, there’s no harm in putting the circus on the websphere.
