The MSI PR400x-BK2+ Laptop

February 15, 2009 · Posted in Gadgets

Having handed down my old Acer Aspire Notebook to Lean (my incoming freshman son), I needed to find a replacement for it quickly. It took me one week to decide on what to get. I almost succumb to the temptation of the white MacBook, but the practical side of me took over, and up to the last minute, I decided to go for a notebook PC instead – the MSI PR400x-BK2.

With just a few days of using the MSI PR400x, I would have to say that I was not disappointed. This laptop certainly got power and an old classic look. Never mind if it doesn’t look as good as the MacBook. I’m thankful I didn’t trade that for the P25K difference in price.

Anyway, the MSI PR400 laptop features a fingerprint scanner for secured login. But I haven’t really activated this feature as I’m having a hard time scanning my fingerprint.

Here’s a quick rundown of the MSI PR400x’s specs:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.0GHz
  • 160GB SATA HDD
  • 2GB DDR2 Memory
  • 14.1-inch AVC Widescreen display
  • 1.3MP webcam
  • 2.0KG
  • WiFi 802.11/g
  • DVDRW Drive

It costs around P29,999 at CompLink in Cyberzone, SM Megamall.

  6. lelila on March 16th, 2009 11:39 am

just bought one yesterday, was torn between this model and the other one of MSI, yung gaming laptop nila. in the end, i have to choose the one with a faster processor, kase yung isa, even though it has a better video card and a dedicated memory for such, pentium dual core lang eh. i’m a multitasker and i think this one is more suited to me.

quick question though, how do i brighten the screen? i’m used to the brighter screen of toshiba kase, thanks!

  7. Anonymous on March 18th, 2009 8:43 pm

Good choice Lelila. Just press “Fn” key (lower left of keyboard) + F5. :-)

  8. lelila on March 20th, 2009 2:09 pm

hi, yeah found out already how to brighten the screen haha! thanks anyway!

  9. aczafra on March 20th, 2009 2:52 pm

    you’re welcome Lelila. ;-)

  15. arnold on April 1st, 2009 5:33 pm

Hi Michael. So far I haven’t experience any heating up on the touch pad. Normally the heat would come out near the battery.

  20. Arnold on April 12th, 2009 12:51 pm

amyet and ryan – unfortunately the laptop doesn’t have Bluetooth. That Bluetooth LED indicator will only be enabled if you plug in a Bluetooth USB device. Hope this helps.

  21. Jay on April 14th, 2009 4:30 pm

I got the black one! Cool! :D

Kulang lang siya sa porma compared to its acer and compaq counterparts but core 2 duo is always better than dual core.

They recently came out with a similar model with ATI Graphics na around 31 or 32k.

Arnold, a friend of mine told me that the older MSI laptops are not that durable. Been looking at the net for reviews about msi laptops couldn’t find much.

By the way, how many hours does your battery lasts?

  22. aczafra on April 15th, 2009 8:12 am

Thanks Jay! Yeah, it’s not as trendy as Acer and Compaq’s notebooks but I love the old classic look of this MSI laptop. :-)

You know what, when I was researching for this laptop, Google didn’t give that many links. The only problem I see with this laptop when it comes to durability is the hinges, it shakes easily. Other than that I think this laptop is pretty durable.

battery life last around 3.5 hours max…regular surfing.

hi poh! i bought this unit last week, jaz want to ask the usage of the webcam? P1 looks like not responding, i dont know how, tnx poh.

  24. mayann on April 15th, 2009 9:48 am

  25. arnold on April 15th, 2009 10:53 am

Hi Joan, you can use the webcam in Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and other chatting facilities that allows webcam facility.

Mayann – You can use the infrared to transfer files from a cellphone which has an infrared capability or a printer din.

  26. Jay on April 17th, 2009 10:58 pm

Hey guys! Saw the same model at SM Megamall’s PC Corner for only P25,500 cash. It retails for P30,000 12 months 0% Interest elsewhere.

Same specs as this one except… ATI Radeon, Core 2 Duo T6400, Dolby Sound and HDD is 200GB. This one’s loaded. Retails for P30,999 Cash.

  30. yzarknoir on May 8th, 2009 4:27 pm

i bought the same unit too, so far i’m not experiencing any problem, ang pinak problem ko lang talaga is ung fan nya, dun kc ang buga ng init sa right side, eh andun din ung usb mouse ko, kaya aun mainit, hehehe, regarding sa sound, ok naman xa, then sa touchpad, umiinit xa pag direct current, pero pag naka battery ndi xa umiinit maxado, ang maganda pa kasi d2 sa msi pr400 meron xang fingerprint software (Upek Protector Suite QL – i’m using version 5.8 – and it supports mozilla firefox version 3.0.x), kung nag dadalawang isip pa kayo kung itong unit na to ang bibilin nyo, wag na, kasi i assure you guys maganda tong unit na to promise,

    ps:
8 hrs a day open ang laptop ko, walang patayan, hehehe, pero doing great parin,, astig dba?

I have a PR400x.. nagkaproblema lang sa battery life.. Nung una 3.5 hrs, tapos after some times, full battery e nasa 40 mins na lang.
