I’ve been playing around with the new social networking tool cum family tree builder called Geni. For awhile I thought it was another boring application which lets you create your own genealogy tree, but as I add one family member to another, I begin to notice the fun!In brief:
Geni lets you create a family tree through our fun simple interface. When you add a relative’s email address, he or she will be invited to join your tree. That relative can then add other relatives, and so on. Your tree will continue to grow as relatives invite other relatives.
Sounds fun eh? But wait, there’s still more to Geni than your usual genealogy builder. Each family member who connects to you can create their own profile and add as much information as they want covering various aspects of their life such as: school, work, favorites and contact information. It’s like creating a friendster profile with automatic link to your relatives’ account.
It would have been nice if all my family members and relatives have their own email. Or maybe they have that I am not aware of. Hopefully, Geni account profiles are open to search engine meta crawlers, so that members of my family and other relatives belonging to my surname, find out about my family tree. Imagine the possibility of tracing your roots and connecting to your long lost relatives. Ambitious? Well, that’s exactly what Geni is trying to achieve–create a family tree of the whole world. Now that is something to look forward to.
